Over the last few years I have
repeatedly been asked the same question over and over, by my patients; Dental
Implant restoration or a fixed Bridge. Patients would like to know which the
better option for them is. If you are looking at it from a purely financial angle;
dental bridges can be a cheaper option, depending on who the cosmetic dentist is,
their qualification, experience and of course the type of bridge provided and
the materials used.
But bridges are supported on the
surrounding good teeth. Over time the load on these perfectly good teeth causes
them to wear away. Or you might have to shave down the other teeth in order to
get the “bridge” done right. This is the worst aspect of the bridge. It weakens
your other teeth while trying to keep your tooth in question. Now, ten years
down the line you will be looking at fixing two more teeth. So, it seems like the
answer to the question dental implant or bridge? The dental implants are a
better option.
To make a bridge for 1 missing
tooth, the 2 adjacent teeth should be drilled down to half the size. This is a
destructive process and results in tooth sensitivity and decay on those 2
teeth. In reality 2 healthy teeth are destroyed to replace one missing tooth.
The final restoration is a 3 tooth bridge that connects one drilled down tooth
to another, with one artificial tooth in the middle.
Using dental implants technology, the same missing tooth can be easily replaced with one dental
implant, and without any damage to any other teeth in the mouth. The restored
implant tooth is individually supported and is not connected to adjacent teeth.
Implants are a major investment
and not without risk. The extensive use of implants can cost tens of thousands
of pounds to achieve a great result. It is also a very time consuming
procedure when having many implants placed. As this procedure is surgery, it is
very important to research and find a well credited cosmetic dentist that you
are comfortable with.
Nonetheless tooth implants are
not the Holy Grail either. As this kind
of advanced cosmetic dentistry in the wrong hands can become a nightmare. There
are so many things that can go wrong with any implant surgery or implant
treatment, including loss of implants, nerve damages , jaw fracture, perforated
sinuses etc…
The most common risk
involves an infection at the site of the implant. An infection can weaken the
gums and cause some types of weaknesses and injuries to occur around the teeth
that surround the dental implant.
