Preston Dentist explains why Sports Drinks can lead to Tooth Erosion

While sports and energy drinks help athletes re-hydrate after a long workout, if consumed on a regular basis they can damage teeth. These beverages may cause irreversible damage to dental enamel.

Sipping on sports drinks can damage your teeth because of the high levels of acid in them  Preston dentist warns. Dental experts placed teeth in sports drinks and in water to compare the effects and found the citric acid in the sports drinks caused corrosion and could result in severe tooth damage if left untreated.

Saying that sports drinks and soda are bad is easy, what is tough is deciding what to drink instead. We all have struggled finding a suitable substitute. Basically high fructose corn syrup is really bad for you and it’s in everything. Hence Diet drinks are better for your teeth but the aspartame in these sugar-free drinks been linked to cancer. The only solutions to this problem could be only drinking more tap-water (obviously not fizzy water).

Soft drinks can be an ultimate danger to your oral health because of the many chemicals that are contained in this beverage. It can directly cause your teeth to chip off because of its weakened state.

Several recent studies have found that sports beverages can damage tooth enamel—even more so than soda—due to a combination of acidic components, sugars, and additives. This research looked specifically at the way sports drinks affected dentin, the dental tissue under enamel that determines the size and shape of teeth.

Any beverage that has high acid content can weaken the enamel, making the teeth more susceptible to bacteria that can sneak into the cracks and crevices in the teeth. Sugar can exacerbate the situation, encouraging the bacterial growth. Drinking soft drinks also is harmful to your general health because of the high sugar content that it has. If you drink this beverage too often, you may develop diabetes aside from damaging your oral health.

Professional advice is imperative when it comes to maintaining your health whether it is dental or otherwise.
·         You should make a habit of drinking plenty of water before and after an activity. This way, you will not feel that you need to drink any kind of enhancers such as a sports drink to give you energy.
·         You should also eat a balanced diet as it is a great substitute for taking sports drinks. When it comes from all natural sources, it ensures your wellbeing.
  • You should seek dietary advice as to the most effective way to replenish your bodily liquids.
  • Use a straw positioned at the back of the mouth so that the liquid avoids the teeth
  • Rinse the mouth with water after drinking acidic beverages.

Some groups at high risk for oral disease and need to be vigilant about self-care and checkups. So, take care of your mouth by brushing and flossing regularly. Not only will you have cleaner teeth and sweeter breath, but your whole body will be healthier. And you may reduce the chances that you will develop a major disease that could shorten your life.
