We brush our teeth regularly,
rinse with a strong mouthwash, and even floss now and then. And, when these
efforts fail, we get our cavities filled with "Amalgam".
Most people would be shocked to discover
that those amalgam or "silver" fillings are actually composed of over
50% mercury - the most toxic non-radioactive metal known to man. Over a million
mercury fillings are still made world-wide every year and people have had this
highly toxic metal packed into one or more cavities.
These silver fillings in your
mouth are actually an amalgamation of at least four different metals, Mercury,
Silver, Copper and Tin and others. These metals combine to form a random
mixture of alloys. Each alloy is separate and unique and therefore has a
different electrical potential than the others. This amalgam is continuously
bathed in electrolytes (saliva, tissue fluids etc.) The dissimilar metals in
electrolytes can therefore act like a battery in your mouth and can cause the
metallic taste in your mouth which a lot of patients often refer to. This can
be made worse if other metals such as crowns and bridges and dentures are also
in the mouth.
Research and clinical experience
show that Mercury sensitivity and toxicity is not Dose dependent but Host
dependent. One person with many mercury amalgam fillings may show none or few
symptoms while the next person reacts strongly after the first amalgam filling
is placed. Sudden emotional or physical trauma can cause toxins to accumulate
inside the body, and a previously symptom free patient can suddenly show heavy
metal toxicity related symptoms.
If you have already decided to
have your mercury amalgam fillings removed, you have made an important decision
towards enhancing and protecting your health. However, you should know that
there are certain risks involved in the removal of this highly toxic metal.
That's why you are advised to seek out a biological or a holistic dentist in Preston that
has been trained in the proper protocol for the safe removal of mercury amalgam
fillings.
Holistic or Organic dentistry
comprises taking a different approach to the practice of dentistry. It means
looking at a patient as a whole person and addressing any issues from that
perspective. Many of the things that happen in the mouth affect the whole body
and many things happening to the body have an impact in the mouth. A holistic
approach means addressing all of these issues in the process of seeking optimal
health.
In Holistic Dentistry we look at
the body as one entire system and treat the teeth and gums as one system. We
also look at the teeth and gums as a representation of overall body health. For
example, bad gums can be related to heart problems, while teeth problems can
lead to or be caused by kidney problems.
Amalgam poses health
concerns
Even when placed into a cavity
filling, mercury vapours are emitted by the amalgam substance. Released in this
form, mercury becomes bio accumulative, which means mercury levels build up in
the body. These levels can even accumulate in fetuses, as mercury crosses the
placenta into the womb. The health risks of mercury in amalgam reach every
person, but especially children, nursing infants, and those with kidney
deficiencies.
Amalgam damages teeth
When an amalgam restoration is
placed, it requires the removal of healthier tooth structure than if other
materials were used. The extensive removal of tooth structure, though necessary
for amalgam to fit, actually weakens the tooth. Amalgam also expands and
contracts with varying temperatures. This process, over time, leads to
fractures in teeth that require additional dental work.
Amalgam is not the only
choice
At Lane Ends Dental Practice, we
strongly emphasis e mercury safe, mercury free, restorative dentistry using bio compatible
materials, therefore we don’t support the use of amalgam 'silver' fillings. Our
preference is for the use of newer, safer and more biologically friendly
materials.
We believe that Silver (metal)
restorations are inferior, and that there is no point in performing a
restoration with a material that looks nothing like natural teeth and will
inhibit your smile.
Today, there are a number of
materials that can be used for dental restorations instead of amalgam. Modern,
tooth-coloured restorations made of durable composite resin or porcelain /
ceramics can be bonded to your teeth for a stronger, more natural-looking
effect. These revolutionary fillings are virtually undetectable and are easy to
apply. Initially tooth-coloured restorations are more expensive than mercury
fillings, however in the long term they have been proven far more cost
effective.
Your smile really is a sign of health and vitality. Protect your well-being with amalgam alternatives.
